Best Health Insurance for Expats in Thailand (2026)

Last updated: May 2026 • 9 min read

Thailand has some of the best private healthcare in Southeast Asia — Bumrungrad and Bangkok Hospital are genuinely world-class. But without insurance, a serious issue can cost tens of thousands of pounds.

Public vs Private Healthcare

Public: Functional and cheap but not where most expats want to be. Long queues, limited English, shared wards. A visit costs 500-2,000 THB.

Private: Excellent in Bangkok — Bumrungrad, Bangkok Hospital, Samitivej, BNH are internationally accredited. Costs:

  • GP consultation: 1,500-3,000 THB (£35-69)
  • Specialist consultation: 2,000-5,000 THB (£46-115)
  • Emergency room visit: 5,000-15,000 THB (£115-345)
  • Surgery (e.g., appendectomy): 80,000-200,000 THB (£1,840-4,600)
  • ICU per day: 15,000-30,000 THB (£345-690)

Cancer treatment or major surgery can run to 1-2 million THB (£23,000-46,000). That's why insurance matters.

Our Recommendation

Retiring to Thailand long-term: Pacific Cross or AETNA Thailand. You don't need worldwide cover if you're in Thailand full-time. A Thai policy is a fraction of the cost. Add travel insurance for trips back to the UK.

Splitting time between Thailand and UK: Cigna Global (regional plan) + NHS. Often cheaper than worldwide cover.

Cost no object: BUPA Global. The gold standard — worldwide cover, direct billing everywhere, excellent service.

Visa Insurance Requirements

O-A retirement visa requires health insurance with at least $100,000 coverage from an OIC-approved insurer. Most major providers are approved, but check before you buy.

Pre-Existing Conditions

Most insurers exclude or charge more for pre-existing conditions. Be completely honest on your application — non-disclosure can void your policy. Pacific Cross and AETNA are generally more flexible than international providers.

Top Tips

  • Get quotes from at least 3 providers
  • Higher deductible (excess) dramatically reduces premiums
  • Ensure cover includes emergency evacuation to Bangkok
  • Keep your NHS entitlement active if you return to the UK regularly
  • Don't skip dental cover — dental work in Thailand is excellent value with insurance
